AMU Receives ₹24 Crore Property Tax Notice from Municipality

Aligarh: The Municipal Corporation has stated that Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) owes ₹24,45,24,241 in property tax. In this regard, the Municipal Corporation issued a demand notice to AMU on January 4.
This notice has been issued for 18 properties of AMU, and the tax has been pending since 2017.
The Municipal Corporation has given 15 days to deposit the tax. If AMU fails to deposit the municipal tax on time, action to seize its accounts may be initiated.
In this matter, Municipal Corporation Reassessment Officer Rajendra Prasad said that ₹24,45,24,241 is due on 18 properties of AMU. Initially, bills were sent to these properties.
After sending the bills, the demand notice was issued. The Municipal Commissioner held a meeting with AMU’s Registrar regarding the pending dues.
The university administration stated that they have applied for a grant from the UGC, and the tax will be paid as soon as the grant is received.
The Municipal Commissioner said that the tax has been pending since 2017. AMU has been given 15 days. After 15 days, they will again request the tax payment. Subsequent actions will include account attachments.
However, the properties will not be seized; only the accounts will be attached.
